C. J. (Jonty) Driver (1939-2023) was a South African-born poet and novelist.
He spent his early life in South Africa, and for two years was the outspokenly anti-Apartheid President of the National Union of South African Students. After being detained by the police, Jonty fled to the UK and was prohibited from entering South Africa for the next 20 years.
Jonty published numerous collections of poetry during his life, as well as five novels and a biography. A number of his books were banned in South Africa for many years. He held the post of headmaster at various schools, including Wellington College, and wrote about education for newspapers including the TLS.
Before his death he was honorary senior lecturer in the School of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
