Christopher Somerville has been a full-time writer since 1988 when he escaped a 15-year stint as a teacher at the chalk-face. He has had some 40 books published – travel guides, books of walks, personal travel accounts, and collections of poems – and several thousand articles in the broadsheets, tabloids and many magazines.

A theme that runs through his work is exploration of the countryside on foot and at slow pace, sometimes abroad (Crete and Ireland are particular favourites), more often within the UK, with an emphasis on obscure, remote and disregarded places. The coasts of these islands are a particular favourite. His walks in the Daily Telegraph, The Times, Irish Independent and Saga Magazine have been read by millions and followed by thousands.

Christopher enjoys walking, singing, talking, listening, laughing, writing poems and playing the melodeon. He lives in Bristol.
